UCLA Football Team Much Improved But Thin At Key Spot

The UCLA football team is much improved in two key areas that make it a very interesting team to watch this season - Quarterback and offensive line play.

Red shirt freshman quarterback Kevin Prince has a canon of an arm at quarterback and during their week one victory at San Diego State Prince exhibited the kind of accuracy not normally seen with QB's with that type of arm strength. Prince placed several balls during the San Diego State game where only UCLA receivers could catch the ball. Kevin Prince also displayed better then you would think mobility.

Kevin Prince also played like the quarterback that hadn't seen any game time action in two years by throwing two interceptions in the second half. Prince is going to have to cut down on the mental mistakes if UCLA wants to stay above .500 this season. UCLA is a much improved team but against some of their tougher opponents the Bruins will find themselves in shoot outs and will have to rely on the arm of Kevin Prince to pull them to victory. More on this later...

The offensive line this year is much improved with transfers and a highly touted freshman class. During the San Diego State game they created some pretty good sized holes and provided decent pass protection for Kevin Prince. It will be interesting to see how they fare against Tennessee of the SEC this week. If the offensive line can hold it's own against the Tennessee defense the the UCLA Bruins should be able to make a game of it.

Disaster Looming For The UCLA Bruins
The UCLA Bruins defense suffered a major setback in the San Diego State game when they lost corner Aaron Hester to a cracked right fibula. Hester should be out about three weeks but it leaves the Bruins incredibly week and thin at the cornerback spot. Courtney Viney standing at 5'7 is the most likely replacement with a walk-on behind him and then a couple of freshman who will now probably be forced into some kind of action.

The DB spot is a big concern particularly against Tennessee this week but it can be minimized if the offense can run the ball and keep the Tennessee offense off the field.
