UCLA Bruins Begin Football Practice And A 2009 Prediction

Nothing makes me happier then knowing that the college football season is nearly upon us. And to make things better the Bruins look like they should improve this season and at least break .500 if not end up a couple of games over...

The UCLA Bruins will again feature one of the best defenses in the country and figure to carry the team which was abysmal this past season. The Bruins feature three standout players on defense one at each of the major positions. Reggie Carter at Linebacker, Brian Price is the best D lineman in the conference and Alterraun Verner is a shut down corner with big play making capabilities.

On offense the UCLA Bruins were a mess last year with third string QB Kevin Craft starting the whole year (due to injuries) and throwing 20 interceptions. He's been replaced this year by Red Shirt freshman Kevin Prince who hasn't played in a game in the past two years.

Nearly as bad as the QB play last year was the play of the offensive line. This season there are 18 offensive linemen in camp with some JuCo transfers and highly touted recruits figuring to fill some holes and upgrade the line dramatically.

It's really important that the UCLA Bruins find and develop some good linemen in camp because head coach Rick Nueheisel really wants to be able to run the ball this season. UCLA fans know all to well what happens when you have a rookie quarterback starting and your team can't run the ball...

I think it's too early to make any predictions about the upcoming season until we see how Red Shirt QB Kevin Prince and the offensive line develop in the upcoming weeks leading up to their September 5 opener against San Diego State. Things could be very interesting if the UCLA Bruins football team can put together a decent line that can sustain a running attack.
